精算學(Actuarial Science)是指根據經濟學的基本原理，運用現代數學、統計、金融和法律等學科知識，對各種經濟活動的風險進行分析、評估和管理。精算是現代保險、金融和投資穩定運作的基礎。
在美國沒有多少學校提供精算碩士學位。開設精算項目的學校大部分把它設置在數學系，個別項目在統計系或商學院。此外，美國的精算專業主要集中在應用的某個方面，如威斯康辛大學麥迪遜分校側重精算在衍生產品方面的應用，其他一部分學校注重精算在醫療保險中的應用。美國提供精算專業的學校有：哥倫比亞大學、波士頓大學、伊利諾伊大學香檳分校等，錄取的學生的專業背景一般是數學、應用數學或統計等。
大多數學生畢業后都會考精算師，多在政府、銀行、金融機構、投資公司、保險公司等機構工作，需求量很大。近幾年來，越來越多的精算師進入咨詢公司，為客戶提供與風險管理有關的咨詢服務。
